FIVE Steps to BlackBerry® in the Air
TONY FRACKER, one of EMS Aviation’s Product Support Specialists outlines five steps to get BlackBerrys® working with Inmarsat-based SwiftBroadband and our Iridium-based AirMail systems.
Many users want to be able to use their BlackBerry in-flight with one of EMS’s two systems: AirMail or the eNfusion® SwiftBroadband system. The steps to connect to either system are the same. By following just five steps, a BlackBerry user will be able to send and receive e-mail in minutes.
Note: The last step may take up to three minutes to complete, depending on the type of BlackBerry and the available signal strength. In the SwiftBroadband system the Wi-Fi network name will be not be the same as what is described below ‘AirMail’. With the SwiftBroadband system the default Wi-Fi name is ‘Satcom Internet Access’. This is user definable, so be sure to check with the operator. The Airmail system’s Wi-Fi network is always called ‘AirMail’.

To connect your Blackberry to the AirMail or eNfusion Swift Broadband Systems
Step 1:
For the Pearl 8220 device: On the Home screen or in the Setup folder, click “Set-Up Wi-Fi”
For 8820 device: On the Home screen or in the application list click “Set-Up Wi-Fi”
For Other devices: On the Home screen, click the Radio Icon and then click “Set-Up Wi-Fi Network.”
Step 2: Click Scan for Networks, and then click “AirMail” or “Satcom Internet Access”
Step 3: Follow the instructions on the screen’s device.
Step 4: Click “Finish.”
The “AirMail” or “Satcom Internet Access” name should appear at the top of the device’s screen indicating that it is the currently selected Wi-Fi network.
Step 5: Wait for the Wi-Fi icon at the top of the screen to change from dimmed (meaning unavailable) to clearly Visible.
Note: Unlike SwiftBroadband, AirMail is intended for text based emails and low speed instant messaging only. The use of attachments, web browsing and other applications are not recommended due the limited available bandwidth.
